our manifesto
Welcome Aboard!
Tideland is committed to storytelling that builds connections and highlights the rich diversity of the people that call the western shores of the central Puget Sound home—from Bainbridge Island to Bremerton, Port Orchard to Port Townsend, Suquamish to Seabeck, and everywhere in between. Here’s our promise to you as we deliver on our tagline: Soul of the West Sound.
We strive to include a full spectrum of voices and backgrounds in our pages, from the indigenous Suquamish and S’klallam Tribes to vibrant Asian, African American, Anglo, Latinx and LGBTQ communities. Plus, we’ll highlight efforts to build more equitable, welcoming communities.
We don’t shy away from hefty topics. We’ll examine the challenging social issues we face—like housing and development, sustainability and conservation, and economic and ethnic inequities—always with an eye towards pioneering solutions.
We believe in the power of a vibrant public commons to improve everyone’s quality of life—from beaches to woodlands to urban squares—and we champion them.
The West Sound is home to an abundance of innovators, artists, writers, activists, healers, artisans, architects, musicians, chefs, athletes and more. We delight in telling their stories and showcasing their talents.
Tideland celebrates the extraordinary natural landscape we call home, where inland sea and land meet to create a rich and dynamic ecosystem. Our pages reflect a deep appreciation for the natural beauty and bounty that unites this region.
We believe in hands-on fun and exploration, so we’ll take readers on adventures around our backyard and beyond—the Olympic Peninsula, Hood Canal, neighboring islands and other Northwest destinations. We’ll also suggest interesting DIY projects and recipes. And we invite you to share your own stories and photos in our pages. Thanks for embarking on this journey with us!
