BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, 11/9/2021—A pair of veteran journalists based on Bainbridge Island unveiled plans today for a new local lifestyle magazine coming to the West Sound in early 2022. 

Tideland will be a coffee table quality print magazine featuring gorgeous photography and design, in-depth journalism and essential information about food, art, the outdoors and local events, said Alorie Gilbert, the magazine’s Publisher and Editor. 

“We want to celebrate what makes life all over our region so special—from our vibrant downtowns to our spectacular parks and shorelines, our rich cultural and entrepreneurial scenes, and the amazing variety of food trucks, farmer’s markets, wineries, and restaurants,” said Gilbert.

With the tagline ‘Soul of the West Sound,’ Tideland aims to fill the gap in the local media landscape left by Bainbridge Island Magazine, which ceased publishing in 2020, but with a broader geographic reach. 

“We’re not exclusive to Bainbridge Island. We’re inclusive of the entire Kitsap Peninsula,” added managing editor Leif Utne, a long-time print and online journalist. 

Gilbert moved to Bainbridge in 2010 after establishing her career in the Bay Area covering the Silicon Valley tech scene for CNet. Utne arrived here in 2006 from Minneapolis, where he was a writer and editor at Utne Reader, a renowned national magazine founded by his father Eric in the 1980s.

Tideland’s premier issue will drop March 1, 2022. The magazine will be ad-supported and distributed free to households on Bainbridge Island and select neighborhoods throughout the Kitsap Peninsula, as well as through cafes, galleries, museums, shops, visitor’s centers, lodgings and realtors. Tideland will also be available online at tidelandmag.com, where readers will find digital editions of the magazine and can subscribe to e-newsletters. Readers can also follow Tideland on Facebook and Instagram.

Tideland is targeted at an audience of active, educated professionals who are engaged in their communities, Gilbert explained. “They’re passionate about the outdoors, family life, local food and the arts. They also care about consequential issues like the environment, education and equity. We’re committed to bringing these topics into focus for its readers, making Tideland the perfect vehicle for advertisers to connect with this influential demographic on both sides of the Agate Pass Bridge.”

“Life on the West Sound is more dynamic and interconnected than ever, and Tideland aims to reflect that in its pages,” added Utne.
